DIESEL ART GALLERY in Shibuya, Tokyo, will be hosting "NO JOKE," a solo exhibition of collaborative works by photographers Roger Ballen and Asger Carlsen, from May 26th to August 17th.
The exhibition features groundbreaking collaborative works by South African-based Roger Ballen, considered one of this century's most important photographers, and New York-based photographer Asger Carlsen, who has attracted international attention for his unprecedented digitally edited human body photo collages. While living far from each other, the two have been exchanging image files via email and Skype since 2013, and have been working together for several years, completing these enigmatic collages based on a single concept. The motifs for this collaboration are sculptural cutouts of photographs, two faces swapped with each other, body parts in places they shouldn't be, mysteriously occupied spaces, cut-out and collaged hand-drawn masks and graffiti, as well as spiders, animals, angels, and demons—all carefully selected from the pair's image collection. These motifs create the feeling of being assembled in a virtual shared studio, a fictional story, or a dream. This exhibition marks the Japanese debut of Asger's work, which was shown simultaneously at Germany's DITTRICH & SCHLECHTRIEM and Denmark's V1 Gallery in 2016, and at Paris Photo 2016, the world's largest photography exhibition. The exhibition will feature 25 carefully selected works from the pair's 37 works. Other exhibits, including related books and merchandise, will also be available for purchase. A book signing by Asger will also be held on May 26th.
