"Marie Antoinette: The True Story of the Queen of France Told Through Artworks," supervised by the Palace of Versailles, will be held at the Mori Arts Center Gallery in Roppongi Hills from October 25 to February 26, 2017. Born in Austria, Marie Antoinette married into France at age 14 and was swept away by the revolution and executed by guillotine at age 37. This exhibition traces her turbulent life, planned and supervised by the Palace of Versailles, where she spent the roughly 20 years between her marriage to Louis XVI and the French Revolution. In addition to portraits, the exhibition will feature approximately 200 items, including the queen's favorite tableware, lacquerware, furniture, clothing, and documents from the Revolutionary period. Also on display will be the undergarments and headbands she wore during her imprisonment before her death by guillotine, as well as the shoes she is said to have removed while ascending to the guillotine. In addition, the bathroom, library, and living rooms of the Queen's private space, the "Petit Appartement," within the Palace of Versailles, will be recreated in full size, complete with the original decorations and furniture that were actually used. The library, which has since disappeared, will be recreated in virtual reality based on the original blueprints, making this an unprecedented exhibition.
