Sep 17, 2016

The Daikanyama Photo Fair, bringing together leading photographers and publishers from Japan and abroad to exhibit a carefully curated selection of art photographs, will be held from September 30th to October 2nd in the area centered around Daikanyama Hillside Forum.

This third year of the event will feature a first-of-its-kind photobook exhibition, "The Photobook." Focusing on the unique postwar history of photobooks in Japan, the exhibition will explore key themes such as media, design, and printing technology. Photographer Ryuichi Kaneko will serve as guest curator, introducing the appeal of photobooks from various angles. There will also be a relay talk by photographers discussing photobooks and their backgrounds.

The main visual for the fair will be by Kikuji Kawada. Selected works from the photobook "Memoirs of Memory" will be on display, and a limited edition photobook compiling the works exhibited at the fair will be released.

In addition, curators from the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Tate Gallery will be visiting Japan for various programs held during the fair. Through talk sessions, these experts, who are also well-versed in the history of Japanese photography, and some of Japan's leading photographers, will discuss the present and future of the photography world in Japan and around the world. Workshops and kids' programs will also be held.
