"The Boundary Between Crafts and Design," an exhibition exploring the boundary between crafts, which can also be described as "artworks," and design, which is a "product," will run from October 8 to March 20, 2017, at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. The exhibition is supervised by product designer Naoto Fukasawa.
The exhibition focuses on the ambiguity between "crafts" and "design" in everyday life. While they are both about making things, they are distinct genres. Based on the concept of discerning the differences between these two concepts, the exhibition highlights the boundary between crafts and design through themes such as "process and materials," "hands and machines," "form," and "rust (aging)."
The exhibition will be based on six themes. "Process and Materials" contrasts craft artists who utilize the properties and power of materials to create crafts using jigs with digital machine tools (such as 3D printers) that can produce without jigs. "Hands and Machines" focuses on the hands of crafters and the machines that imitate those hands.
In addition, "Shape" unravels the forms of crafts and design that are refined by the addition of human hands. "Changes over time" focuses on the creation of objects whose texture changes over time, creating a sense of attachment for the user, and considers the possibility that time can transform design into crafts. "The Boundary between Craft and Design" focuses on appearance and functionality, comparing the meticulous skilled techniques of artisans with precision machinery. "New Horizons in Craft" exhibits the development of crafts that is being opened up by advances in technology.
