Photo fair held in Daikanyama, with participation from leading art world artists IMA, G/P, Seiyama, twelvebook, and others

Sep 4, 2014

The "HILLSIDE TERRACE pHOTO FAIR" will be held at Daikanyama Hillside Forum from September 4th to 7th. Admission is 1,500 yen for adults and 1,000 yen for students.

Participating galleries include 18 leading art photography galleries, such as Yumiko Chiba Associates, Naruyama Gallery, and G/P gallery, as well as 10 bookstores and publishers, including amanasalto, Akaaka Art Publishing, and shelf. Works selected by each gallerist will be exhibited and sold at the venue, and the fair will also collaborate with various events being held in Tokyo around the same time to liven up the town with art photography.

During the event, different guests will visit each day to hold talk shows and workshops. Talk show guests include Ryuichi Kaneko (photography historian, curator at Tokyo Photographic Art Museum) x Eikoh Hosoe x Kikuji Kawada x Akira Tanno, Issei Suda x Risaku Suzuki x Harumi Niwa (curator at Tokyo Photographic Art Museum), Miyako Ishiuchi x Amanda Maddox (J. Paul Getty Museum) on the 4th, Lucille Reyboz x Yusuke Nakanishi (organizer/chief of the Kyotographie International Photography Festival), Daido Moriyama x Minoru Shimizu (photo critic), Shigeo Goto x Kan Nozaki x Daisuke Yokota x Takashi Kawashima x Takaaki Akaishi on the 5th, and Beat Streuli x Shino Kuraishi (photo critic), Rei Masuda (National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo) x Ken Kitano x Toshiya Murakoshi x Taku Arai, Atsushi Hamanaka (twelvebooks) x Yusuke Nakajima (POST) x Takayuki Ishii (Taka Ishii Gallery) on the 6th. Tickets start from 500 yen. On the 5th, workshops will be held where participants can try collotype printing under the guidance of technicians from Benrido, a long-established Kyoto fine art printing company. On the 6th, there will be a "Platin Print Workshop" where participants can experience creating their own original prints, and a "Gelatin Silver Print Workshop" launched by a photography production company that produces prints for Nobuyoshi Araki and Daido Moriyama. Also, as a related event during the fair, a "Pop-Up Bookstore STEIDL+MACK" will open in the venue's "Gallery ON THE HILL." Since its founding in 1967, Steidl is a German publishing house that has captivated photography fans worldwide with its in-house projects, from planning to printing, binding, and publishing. Meanwhile, in 2010, Michael Mack, Steidl's former director of photobooks for 20 years, founded the UK publishing company MACK.

This project is a joint project between POST (in charge of Steidl) and twelvebooks (in charge of Mac), official partners entrusted with the distribution and planning of publications by both publishers in Japan. The store is a condensed version of the worldview of these internationally acclaimed publishers.

The reception held on the 3rd was attended by many artists, journalists, and other people in the art world.
