Iittala, a pioneer of Nordic design and a brand developed by Fiskars Japan Co., Ltd., embodies the essence of Nordic living and is adding seven new items to its hugely popular Recycled Glass Collection, launched last year.
In spring 2019, Iittala became one of the world's first brands to have a factory producing tumblers made entirely from recycled glass. Since then, Iittala designs from various decades have been produced entirely from recycled glass, and in 2020, the company launched a 100% recycled glass collection. In late September 2021, the collection will expand with the addition of seven new items.
By 2030, Iittala aims to recycle or reuse all waste from its operations and to send no waste to landfills.

It is generally believed that simply minimizing the waste sent to landfill by reusing materials in produced products can significantly reduce the environmental impact of new product production. However, Iittala is not stopping there. It has set a goal of recycling or reusing all waste from its operations and eliminating it from landfill by 2030.
In fact, the Iittala Glass Factory has already achieved its goal of diverting waste glass from landfills and reusing it. Until now, glass has been discarded during the mouth-blown glass production process, when adding glass raw materials to the blast furnace, and during furnace inspections. Until now, this glass has been reused as raw material for the construction industry to manufacture insulation. We are currently collecting and recycling as much waste glass as possible to create a new collection made from 100% recycled glass.
In the future, we also plan to use most of the waste glass from our factory to manufacture new glass products.
An evolving collection of unique items
Until now, Iittala has used carefully selected designs from its past products in its 100% recycled glass collection. Seven long-loved designs will be newly introduced in the collection to be released this fall. The new additions include a tumbler from Frutta, designed by Oiva Toikka in 1968, a bowl and carafe from Rami, designed by Jasper Morrison in 2019 and 2020, Bird Sieppo from Bird by Toikka, designed by Oiva Toikka in 1972, a 120mm vase from the Alvar Aalto Collection, designed by Alvar Aalto in 1936, and two items, a universal glass and a bowl, from the Kastehelmi series, designed by Oiva Toikka in 1964.
In addition to these new items, five items that have been produced so far as the 100% recycled glass collection will also be available in 2021: the 160mm Alvar Aalto Collection vase, the Rami tumbler, the Kastehelmmi tumbler, and candle holders from the Alvar Aalto Collection and Kastehelmi. (The Larmi Tumbler will be released in December.)
Items made from 100% recycled glass are as durable, transparent and high quality as items made from virgin materials. Due to the nature of recycled glass, small air bubbles and visual variations visible within the glass give each piece a unique feel. The colors of the collection vary, from cool blues to muted greens and earthy hues, depending on the color of the discarded glass used in its production.

Research and development
Iittala is actively engaged in research and development, with the goal of launching the 100% Recycled Glass Collection as a permanent collection in 2022. The collection features Iittala's iconic designs and is comprised of everyday essentials, so only items that pass strict quality control will be released to market.
Producing 100% recycled glass requires not only product development but also innovation in the production process at our factories.
Compared to glass made from entirely new raw materials, utilizing waste glass from manufacturing requires more steps, such as collecting, crushing, and melting, and the manufacturing process requires more manual steps than glass made from virgin raw materials.
In addition, heated soft glass has different hardness and handling characteristics than recycled and virgin materials, requiring not only innovation in the production process but also the expertise of the outstanding artisans at Iittala's glass factory.
Please note that the release date of each item in the new 100% Recycled Glass Collection may vary depending on the development status.
It is available at Iittala stores nationwide and the official online store.
