Fujio Ishimoto, a textile designer for the Finnish lifestyle brand Marimekko, is currently holding his second large-scale solo exhibition in Japan, "Fujio Ishimoto: Fabric and Ceramics - Winter," at Spiral Garden in Aoyama, Tokyo. This is Ishimoto's second large-scale exhibition in Japan. The diverse exhibits, themed on the rich forms of winter depicted through fabric and ceramics, convey Ishimoto's unique, gentle gaze on nature and keen sense of color. Ishimoto worked at Marimekko for approximately 30 years until 2006, during which time he created approximately 300 textile patterns. His signature works, such as the "Mattaira" series, which features marsh flowers, and the "Taiga" series, which evokes the wind blowing across the land, are highly acclaimed worldwide for their unique fusion of Finnish nature and Japanese aesthetics.
Currently, at the art department of "Arabia," he is working on creating ceramic works with motifs of imaginary flowers and natural landscapes.
The venue will feature flowers that express the texture of black earth, ceramic works inspired by a lotus pond at night and the moon reflected on its surface, and colorful floral reliefs, as well as a large number of Marimekko fabrics, mainly "Selanne." There will also be many fashion-related highlights, such as shirts, dresses, and archives of fabric samples.
