Fendi unveils women's Spring/Summer 2022 ready-to-wear collection, marking Kim Jones' second year at the brand

Sep 30, 2021

FENDI, the luxury brand renowned in Rome, Italy, unveiled its Spring/Summer 2022 women's ready-to-wear collection, created by Artistic Director Kim Jones (RTW), Silvia Venturini Fendi (Accessories), and Delfina Delettrez Fendi (Jewelry), on Wednesday, September 22, 2021, at 2:00 PM (Italian time).

For Kim Jones's second ready-to-wear collection, he explored the playful and confident attitude that is the Maison's historic hallmark, while clearly articulating his vision for the brand's future. It captures the glamour of the disco era with a modern lens, shining a spotlight on the diverse and powerful femininity that defines the Fendi name.

Taking as its starting point the hand-drawn logo of visionary fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez, unearthed from the archives, the collection evokes his liberated sensibility and the atmosphere surrounding Studio 54, the legendary New York nightclub that attracted celebrities from around the world in the 1970s.

Kim Jones said: "Tracing Karl Lagerfeld's legacy at the house, I also looked at his contemporaries and interests. Lopez, a friend of Karl's, has always been an inspiration to me. He was forward-thinking, open-minded, and inclusive, and admired by everyone from Andy Warhol to Steven Meisel to David Hockney. I wanted to introduce him to a new generation." In collaboration with The Estate and Archive of Antonio Lopez and Juan Ramos, Lopez's work has been brought to life. His dynamic brushstrokes are translated into elegant abstractions on kaftans and silk shirts, while his figurative drawings are transformed into intarsia leather and intricately crafted lace.

Iconic bags are the canvas for Lopez's work and the House's renowned savoir-faire. The Baguette features a rainbow tapestry, while the Peekaboo is like an artwork. The FENDI First line embodies a bold attitude with its lustrous leather bags and resin-encased "F" heels. Lily-of-the-valley hair accessories, adapted from Lopez's illustrations, exude a decadent tropical vibe.

Kim Jones adds: "For me, this first live Fendi show feels like a celebration. We've been forced to live restrictive lives for so long. I believe that what we need right now is for the woman we represent to dress up and let loose, something she naturally enjoys." The spirit of the women Lopez often spotted on the dance floor and celebrated in her work—Jerry Hall, Tina Chow, Pat Cleveland, Bianca Jagger, and Grace Jones—brings energetic energy and new dimension to Kim Jones's work, which has always celebrated the confident woman. "The Fendi I create is for all generations. It is for all types of women, all women who want to feel good about themselves and be happy with themselves. The 'Lopez woman' and the 'Fendi woman' are women who are confident and carve out their own paths in life."
