Exhibition of eraser print artist Nancy Seki held at Shibuya Parco

Sep 18, 2014

"Facial Amusement Park: Nancy Seki, Eraser Demon," an exhibition by Nancy Seki, the world's first eraser printmaker and columnist, will be held at the Parco Museum in Shibuya from November 14th to November 25th.
This exhibition, which first opened in Umeda, Osaka, in April 2014 and garnered rave reviews, has now been expanded and brought to Tokyo. The exhibition features nearly all of Nancy Seki's works, approximately 80 of them, as well as 800 original stamps that can only be seen at exhibitions, as well as valuable materials such as her work tools, video recordings, and cassette tapes. Other exhibits include masterpieces selected by television writer Hiromi Machiyama from columns written between 1985 and 2002, and a variety of face-themed items with stamps on dresses and shoes. There will also be a corner where visitors can take commemorative photos with her works and receive commemorative stamps. The exhibition will also feature masking tape (¥380) and "Nancy Seki's Apprentice Stickers" (¥360), created in collaboration with Okayama's retro goods shop "Kurashiki Isho," new tenugui hand towels (¥1,300) created in collaboration with the long-established tenugui (hand towel) maker "Kamawanu," as well as original merchandise for the exhibition, including T-shirts (¥3,000) and bags (¥3,000). Nancy Seki was born on July 7, 1962, in Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture. After graduating from high school, she went on to Hosei University. While there, she began carving stamps out of erasers, and her "Apprentice Series of 10" caught the eye of columnist Ichiro Enokido, leading to her debut as an eraser printmaker in 1984. Seiko Ito, then an editor at Hot Dog Press, gave her the nickname "Nancy," and she began her serial column, "Nancy Seki's Kanji Ippatsu!", on the reader submissions page. While continuing to write, she also carved over 5,000 eraser prints. She passed away on June 12, 2002.
