Eco-friendly Smart Illumination Yokohama to be held at the end of October, bringing together artists from Japan, China and Korea

Sep 19, 2014

"Culture City of East Asia 2014 Yokohama Smart Illumination Yokohama 2014," an art event utilizing energy-saving technology, will be held from October 30th to November 3rd, mainly in the urban and waterfront areas of Yokohama City. The opening lighting ceremony will begin at 6pm on October 30th, and the lights will be on from 5pm to 10pm except on the first day.

This year's theme is "Primary Light (meaning "primitive/fundamental light") - light that communicates," and the event will reexamine the concept that is the origin of smart illumination.

In addition to lighting up historical buildings and other structures, a wide variety of expressions such as participatory installations, workshops, and events will create "another Yokohama night view." Events include a "City Exhibition," where companies and other organizations light up the streets with their own lighting technology, and the "FutureCity Yokohama Smart Illumination Award 2014," a unique initiative in Yokohama that explores new ways to utilize environmentally symbiotic lighting technology while promoting the city's future through the creativity of artists.

This year, the event will be held in an expanded area, extending from Yokohama's waterfront area and Midori Ward to Kanazawa, Tsurumi, and Izumi Wards. Part of the "Culture City of East Asia 2014 Yokohama" initiative, implemented in collaboration with Quanzhou City in China and Gwangju Metropolitan City in South Korea, the event will feature art programs by artists from Japan, China, and South Korea tailored to the local characteristics of each ward. A rich program is planned, including an outdoor play by Kyota Takahashi and Yukio Shiba using a moving projector, "Building Play," and "Chibibi," a bonfire created by Toru Oyamada, representing the "most primitive form of fire," to be held at Zou-no-hana Park.
