Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Proposes Waterfront Lifestyle

Sep 1, 2014

As part of the Mizube Ring Project, which aims to create new ways to utilize waterfront areas as recommended by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store has opened a limited-time store called "Zubering Store - Tsukimatsu Mizube" in the Hajimarino cafe on the 7th floor of the main building, where customers can experience a lifestyle of enjoying waterfront areas such as rivers. The store will be open until September 2nd.

"Mizube Ring" is an initiative that brings together businesses and government to create beautiful waterfront neighborhoods and create a movement that will generate new vitality. It was launched in 2014 in response to the relaxation of regulations on the use of river spaces. The name is a combination of "waterfront + RING" and "waterfront + R (renovation) + ING (progressive tense)." The Mizube Ring Store is linked to the "Tsukimachiko" (an ancient Japanese culture of gathering, appreciating, and spending time together while waiting for a specific moon shape, such as the full moon or a crescent moon), which began on August 27th at the entire Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi department store. The venue proposes waterside lifestyles by combining traditional Japanese culture with three different scenes: solo, couples, and groups. The "Solo" zone offers suggestions for quietly enjoying sake and reading, or cycling along the water on a folding bicycle. The "Two-person" zone offers conversation over wine or coffee. The "Group" zone suggests group activities like music, food, and enjoying the night sky. The background to this event is that while river improvements have progressed to protect residents' lives from flooding, people's lives and cityscapes have become increasingly distant from waterfronts. However, in recent years, deregulation has progressed with the aim of creating beautiful waterfront towns, and movements have begun in waterfront areas across the country to actively utilize the power of citizens and the private sector.By creating an opportunity for people to experience life by the waterfront at this store, we aim to change the relationship between waterfronts and people, and add the added value of enjoyment to waterfront life.
