"ELEGANT CELL - A Small Laboratory for Cells and Biomaterials," an exhibition of artworks using cells, will be held from February 17th to 23rd at the gallery on the first floor of Building S of the Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo, Komaba Research Campus.
The Takeuchi Laboratory at the University of Tokyo conducts research into arranging living cells as highly functional components to create three-dimensional shapes, such as by processing cells into bead-like shapes and placing them in molds to solidify, or arranging them into threads and knitting them. The laboratory has previously collaborated with the Yamanaka Laboratory at the University of Tokyo to create new products using cells.
This exhibition will feature cell sculptures and newly designed laboratory equipment. The lineup includes biomedical equipment (devices related to biomedical care) created by Panasonic Healthcare and industrial designer Shunji Yamanaka, as well as a "vessel for living cells" created by artist Yasuhiro Suzuki using cells and biomaterials.
In addition, there will be a talk session with artists Shiho Fukuhara and Yamanaka from 6:00 to 7:30 pm on February 17th, actress Ayaka Ikezawa and University of Tokyo professor Shoji Takeuchi at the same time on the 19th, and Suzuki, Takeuchi and Yamanaka from 2:00 to 3:30 pm on the 21st.
