Feb 2, 2016

From February 2nd to 16th, the Mitsukoshi Ginza store will host "DISCOVER! TOKYO," an event focusing on Tokyo's ever-evolving pop culture and fashion, attracting attention from around the world, on all floors.

The highlight of this event is the release of limited-edition items featuring "CANDY GIRL," a neo-Japonism character art by Yoshitaka Amano, a leading figure in Japanese pop culture. Fashion accessories, lifestyle items, and food items will be featured primarily on the store's basement 2, 1st, 2nd, and 7th floors. The "Yoshitaka Amano Exhibition: CANDY GIRL," held in the 7th floor gallery, will run until the 9th.

Yoshitaka Amano was born in 1952. He worked at an animation production company, designing characters for the "Time Bokan" series and "Gatchaman." After going independent, he expanded his range of activities to include character design and stage art for the "Final Fantasy" game. In 2012, he launched the "CANDY GIRL PROJECT." CANDY GIRL is an illustration of 108 girls drawn in colorful candy-like shapes, and collaborations between the illustration, luxury brands, traditional crafts, and more have made it a symbol of Cool Japan.

This time, Amano will be collaborating with Discord Yohji Yamamoto at the store. Two limited edition tote bags (1 million yen) featuring Amano's hand-drawn CANDY GIRL illustration will be released (each one-of-a-kind), as well as collaborations with newneu. tote bags (27,000 yen) and shoes (22,000 yen), and festaria bijou SOPHIA necklaces (180,000 yen).

In addition, lifestyle items will also be available, such as sticker covers for the iPhone 6 and 6s printed with CANDY GIRL (4,200 yen), porcelain plates (2,500 yen), and chopstick rests (set of 5 for 3,500 yen). From 2:00 pm on the 6th, there will also be an autograph session with Amano in the gallery on the 7th floor of the store. (※Participation is limited to the first 50 people who purchase the art book between the 2nd and 6th.)

In addition, during the event, "Tokyo-based fashion brands" will also be introduced on the women's floor of the store. FACETASM will be offering limited-edition items from its SS16 collection, as well as blouses (¥39,000) and skirts (¥41,000). TARO HORIUCHI will be releasing an asymmetrical dress (¥24,000), and beautiful people will be releasing a feminine rider's jacket (¥82,000). MIHARA YASUHIRO will be releasing a denim pullover (¥29,000) with a fringed hem for a three-dimensional shape. Additionally, on the store's third-floor women's clothing floor, "Le PLAYCE," customers and sales staff will be able to interview "Tokyo designers" in advance, and a panel displaying their responses will be set up. An opening ceremony was held at the store on the first day of the event. Guests included Yoshitaka Amano, Alodia, who is a fan of Amano's Final Fantasy characters, and Mademoiselle Yulia, who loves CANDY GIRL's mysterious yet cute nature, and they all spoke about the appeal of CANDY GIRL.
