Gerhard Richter's largest and final glass work will be on public display for a limited time only in the summer on a deserted island in the Seto Inland Sea.

May 18, 2016

"Gerhard Richter: 14 Glass Panels/Teshima," the largest glass work by world-renowned German contemporary artist Gerhard Richter, will be open to the public from 8:45 AM to 6:00 PM on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays only from May 28 to August 28 on Teshima, an uninhabited island located almost in the center of the Seto Inland Sea in Kamijima Town, Ehime Prefecture.

Gerhard Richter is a contemporary artist who is truly and renowned worldwide, with his works included in the collections of major art museums around the world. During his first visit to the Seto Inland Sea in the fall of 2011, Richter fell in love with the scenery and nature of Teshima and agreed to have his work permanently exhibited there for the first time in Japan.

The artwork being exhibited this time, "Gerhard Richter: 14 Glass Panels/Teshima," is an art piece consisting of 14 transparent glass panels measuring 190 x 180 cm, arranged at slightly different angles to form a V-shape. Approximately 8 meters long, this is Gerhard Richter's last and largest glass sculpture. The box-shaped building housing the work was also built based on Richter's ideas and designs. The building, located on a slope surrounded by bamboo forest, is fully glass-paneled on the ocean side to allow ample sunlight in. Three vertical windows on each side of the solid oak-clad wall allow the intensity, direction, and color of the light entering the room to change with the passage of time, the season, and the weather. The 14 glass panels reflect the light, casting the surrounding scenery and the viewer's own shadow, creating an infinite range of expressions. Viewing is free (identification required). Teshima can be reached by municipal liner ferry, which operates twice daily from Innoshima Habu Port (Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture) or Yuge Port (Kamijima Town, Ehime Prefecture).
