To commemorate the 140th anniversary of Seiko's founding, Seiko Watch Corporation will release a Grand Seiko model equipped with the latest Spring Drive movement, Caliber 9RA2, on December 10th. The model features the surface of Lake Suwa in Shinshu, Japan, as a motif, expressing the brand philosophy "THE NATURE OF TIME." The suggested retail price is 990,000 yen (tax included), and the watch is limited to 2,021 pieces worldwide.

Grand Seiko's brand philosophy, "THE NATURE OF TIME," embodies two elements of the Japanese spirituality: a sensibility inspired by nature and the changing seasons, and the artisan's pursuit of the essence of time by mastering their respective paths.

A dial that captures the beautiful surface of Lake Suwa

Lake Suwa is located close to the Shinshu Toki no Takumi Kobo (Shinshu Toki no Takumi Workshop) at Seiko Epson Corporation's Shiojiri Plant, where Grand Seiko Spring Drive models are produced. Boasting the largest area in Shinshu, Lake Suwa is located in the center of the high-altitude Suwa Basin, surrounded by mountains including the Yatsugatake mountain range and the Japanese Alps, and is blessed with clear air and abundant water. The lake is a symbol of the Suwa region, where the silk industry thrived in the past and has supported the development of precision machinery industries such as wristwatches to this day. This model is inspired by the scene of Lake Suwa, where the wind blowing across the lake gently creates the sound of small waves in the stillness of early morning, and the surface of the water is meticulously expressed on the embossed dial. Depending on the angle of the light, this "Minamo pattern" appears to resemble the surface of the water swaying in a gentle breeze, and combined with the smooth sweeping movement of the second hand, unique to Spring Drive, it evokes the passage of time in the tranquility of a lakeside. The gold Grand Seiko logo and second hand represent the morning sun sparkling on the water's surface, adding an elegant accent to the vibrant Minamo blue dial.

Next-generation Spring Drive Movement "Caliber 9RA2"

This model is equipped with Grand Seiko's exclusive next-generation Spring Drive movement, "Caliber 9RA2." While this movement offers the same performance as the revolutionary Caliber 9RA5, introduced in 2020, the power reserve indicator is positioned lower on the case back, allowing for a thinner case. The beautiful blued steel indicator hand complements the "Shinshu Frost Finish," which evokes the frost seen in the Shinshu region during the coldest months of the year, revealing a tranquil expression through the case back.

A case design born from the pursuit of the essence of a wristwatch

The design of this model inherits the design grammar established with the 44GS in 1967, while incorporating a Japanese sensibility that finds beauty "between light and shadow," guided by a new design grammar that aims to further evolve essential legibility and wearability.
The distortion-free case, achieved through Zaratsu polishing, emits a harmonious shine, and the deeply grooved indexes and three-dimensional hour and minute hands, which are distinguishable by their strong contrast, achieve unparalleled legibility. The watch is also more comfortable to wear thanks to a bracelet that provides a firmer hold and a case designed to fit comfortably on the wrist while maintaining a low center of gravity.

Since its launch in 1960, Grand Seiko has strived to create the finest wristwatches, continuously pursuing and realizing the essential qualities of a watch—accuracy, beauty, and legibility—at a high level, and making tireless progress. Since launching globally in 2010, Grand Seiko has earned worldwide acclaim for its top-level performance and sophisticated design, which only a truly rare manufacturer in the world can achieve.
