May 23, 2016
A new approach to cycling through New York City. What does New York look like from a bicycle, not a taxi, subway, or even walking?
Yuki Goto of Manhattan bicycle shop CHARI&CONYC, LLC will guide you through New York's sights you'll want to see by bicycle and recommended cafes and restaurants for a quick break!

The benefits of cycling through New York City include not only being faster than other forms of transportation, but also being able to fully enjoy the scenery of one of the world's most iconic cities. Wandering through the concrete jungle and crossing bridges, the skyscrapers (though those are all old-fashioned words) are captivating.

Once you cross the bridge and step into Brooklyn, you'll be greeted by a chill, clear atmosphere that makes you feel like you've entered a completely different city. Ride your bike to the trendiest cafe of the moment. Even such a lame phrase becomes cool and intoxicating in New York.

The spot I recommend this time is Devocion Cafe. Located on Grand Street & Wythe Avenue, Devocion Cafe is just off the Williamsburg Bridge, a large suspension bridge connecting the Lower East Side (Manhattan) and Williamsburg (Brooklyn).

It seems to have been renovated from a former warehouse, with a high ceiling and the air being filled with noise. Continuing down the narrow corridor from the entrance, it looks like they are preparing coffee beans to be sold wholesale to other shops.

Going further in, you'll find an impressive square space with strong sunlight coming in through the skylight illuminating the sofa and table in the middle. The space features New York's iconic brick walls and East Coast-style fixtures. The seats in the shade are already full. That's right, it seems the sunlight coming through the skylight, which makes the place look stylish, is so hot that no one can sit in the center seat. For better or worse, this is a recommended cafe in Brooklyn.

Moved to the US in 2002, and in 2008 opened a bicycle shop called CHARI&CO, which sounds like "charinko" in English, in Manhattan, New York. The brand is being developed to allow team riders to participate in races in the US and Europe. Currently, they take riders to races in New York, London, Barcelona, and Milan. They are also rooted in the community of New York graffiti artists and skaters who have been active since the 1980s.
