Located about 100km northeast of Mexico City, the Palmitas neighborhood of Pachuca is home to a vibrant and eye-catching mural by the Mexican street art collective Germen Crew, who collaborated with the government to create it.
The mural, however, is on a completely different scale than the typical single-site murals we see today. For this project, Germen Crew chose the walls of homes throughout the neighborhood as their canvas.
The project was designed to beautify and revitalize the Palmitas neighborhood. The area covered is 20,000m2. First, the entire neighborhood was painted white, and then each home was given a psychedelic color scheme. More than 209 homes were painted, and 452 households and 1,808 people live within this monumental work of art.
While the primary goal of this art project was to beautify and revitalize the neighborhood, it also had an unexpected effect. Perhaps the vivid, colorful scheme of the artwork has naturally changed the personalities of the people living there, as it is said that the violent crimes that had been occurring among young people have surprisingly disappeared. It is also said that new jobs have been created as a result of the project.
The colorful artwork, which makes you feel happy just by looking at it, matches the image of bright and cheerful Mexicans, and you can picture the faces of the residents living happily there.
