Eyewear brand TYPE releases new model incorporating the design of "typefaces"

Aug 12, 2015

TYPE, an eyewear brand launched last January with a new concept: choosing eyeglass designs the same way you choose a typeface. On August 11, four new models (25,000 yen each) were released.

Just as typefaces affect the way a message is conveyed, subtle differences in frame design can change the impression the wearer makes. Approaching eyeglasses from this design perspective, inspired by the functional and aesthetic similarities between typefaces and eyeglasses, these glasses are handcrafted by artisans in Sabae City, known as the "holy land of eyeglasses."

This concept is even reflected in the names of the glasses: each pair is named after a typeface, such as Helvetica(R) or Garamond, and the frame design is inspired by that typeface. Just as one can choose different "weights" of the same typeface, eyeglasses can be chosen from three different frame thicknesses (Light, Regular, and Bold) to suit the individual's needs. The four new models announced this time are Eurostile, Friz Quadrata, Optima, and Serif Gothic. As before, there are three frame colors to choose from (Black, Tortoise, and Clear) and three weights (compatible with eyeglass frames and sunglasses; except for Friz Quadrata, which comes in two types: Regular and Bold), and each design incorporates the characteristics of the typeface. Inspired by a typeface created in Italy, "Eurostile" has a charming design composed of rounded squares. Meanwhile, "Friz Quadrata," based on a typeface widely used by universities and government agencies, features sharp angles and edges to create a bold and striking eye look.

Inspired by a typeface said to have been created in the 1950s inspired by an inscription at the Santa Croce Basilica in Italy, "Optima" features a sophisticated, rounded design that is both modern and classic. "Serif Gothic," which strikes a balance between rounded shapes and sharp, linear lines, is a simple yet unique item.

These products are available on the TYPE official website, at the Oh My Glasses TOKYO Shibuya Loft store, and on the online eyewear website "Oh My Glasses TOKYO." A pop-up is also planned for early September at 1LDK AOYAMA HOTEL.
