"LOUIS 200" is a global project celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of founder Louis Vuitton. As part of this project, "200 LOUIS" is a store window display project in which 200 outstanding creators reinterpret the iconic trunk as a container. This project began on August 4th at select Louis Vuitton stores, including the Ginza Namiki Dori store, Omotesando store, and Shibuya Men's store.

"200 LOUIS," which will be available in Louis Vuitton stores around the world, is first and foremost a bold and majestic project that pays homage to Louis, the entrepreneur, innovator and dreamer. The trunk, Louis Vuitton's most iconic item, is reimagined as a container, building blocks, or even a blank canvas, allowing each creator to express their own imaginative artistic style. Throughout the history of the Maison, Louis Vuitton's window displays have always showcased the finest craftsmanship as a stage to captivate passersby, and through them, stories that express modern desires, fears, and dreams unfold.

The starting point for all 200 visionaries was a 50x50x100cm box, close to the original trunk dimensions developed by Louis Vuitton in the 1850s. At the time, Louis Vuitton redesigned the trunk's structure by flattening the lid, revolutionizing the trunk-making industry. Artists were given the opportunity to create without limitations, using their ingenuity and in any medium: deconstructing, reusing, interacting with, projecting, and modifying. From showcasing exquisite craftsmanship to utilizing augmented reality (AR), writing on surfaces, and even dancing, the resulting works reflect the unique perspectives of their creators.

The diverse backgrounds, nationalities, and self-identities of the contributors, including painters, skateboarders, writers, curators, dancers, musicians, architects, botanists, poets/activists, aeronautical engineers, tapestry artists, directors, astrologers, stylists, astronauts, glove makers, Paralympic swimmers, countertenor singers, and drag queens, are emblematic of the project's concept. The diverse range of contributors' backgrounds, nationalities, and self-identities is also representative of the project's concept, including creative collectives, design studios, and galleries. While certain artist names grab attention, such as Gloria Steinem, BTS, NIGO®, Sou Fujimoto, and Frank Gehry, all 200 creators share the visionary thinking that makes them influential in their fields.

This ambitious project, supervised by Louis Vuitton's Visual Image Studio, is one of the initiatives taking place throughout 2021 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the Maison's founder, Louis. Louis Vuitton store window displays will feature three different formats depending on the store. In the first, a trunk covered with screen panels floats in the air, displaying the creations in a continuous video loop. The black background creates a dramatic effect, like a magic box illuminated with a montage of artwork. In the second variation, a giant robotic figure made up of boxes evokes the store window displays that founder Louis created by stacking trunks. In the third variation, prints of each creation are placed within a grid of cubes, creating a three-dimensional "Damier" pattern that will be available in several stores from late August. Twice a day, stacks of paper are removed from each cube and are planned to be reused.

A gift is essential for any meaningful birthday celebration. Louis Vuitton will donate 10,000 euros in the name or on behalf of each Visionary to one of 15 non-profit organizations, bringing the total donation to 2 million euros. These nonprofit organizations were selected for their focus on enabling young people and underserved communities to connect with and discover art and creativity, and represent various facets of creativity across 13 countries and five continents.

In addition to window displays, some stores will also feature spectacular facade displays, such as a giant Damier pattern on the facade of the New York Fifth Avenue store and a majestic image of Louis Vuitton towering over passersby.

Through "200 LOUIS," the 200th anniversary of Louis Vuitton's birth will ultimately be positioned as a momentous adventure, blending past and future into the present. In short, this collaborative project will allow the Maison's heritage to become a new code, inspiring new inspiration, reflection, and joy.
