On the evening of the 20th, ahead of its August 21st reopening, Seibu Shibuya held a lighting ceremony for the Art Gate at the first-floor entrance of Building A. The Art Gate features LED visions attached to four pillars at the entrance, constantly changing images based on human movement, ambient temperature, and lunar pulses. No single image stays the same for even a second. This new face of the store, themed around "art and design," was created by German-based music and video artist Carsten Nicolai. He is also known for his musical work under the name Alva Noto, and has collaborated with Japanese artists such as Ryuichi Sakamoto and Ryoji Ikeda. He won the Grand Prize in the Art Division as a media artist at the 2013 Japan Media Arts Festival, sponsored by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. "I've been to Shibuya countless times since my first visit to Japan in 1995. This is my first time working with a department store, but it's an honor and a great joy to be able to show my work here, which has changed so much since my first visit and continues to evolve," says Nicolai. To celebrate the store's reopening, the third-floor event space will feature a special collaboration between Nicolai and ANREALAGE, which is featured in the store's event space. In keeping with the brand's AW15-16 theme of "LIGHT," the limited edition sale features dresses, blouses, and cut-and-sew items, primarily featuring designs featuring Nicolai's work illuminated by light. "I originally wanted to try a product that changes color with temperature, but I didn't have enough time," said ANREALAGE designer Kunihiko Morinaga, who visited the floor for the pre-opening event. Also, on the seventh floor of Building A, an opening event will feature the "Iris van Herpen Exhibition," an exhibition by Dutch designer Iris van Herpen, known for her experimental 3D-printed couture and costume designs for artists like Bjork and Lady Gaga.
