Ceramic artist Shohei Fujita's exhibition "Potts on the Wall" opens at Shibuya Hikarie, showcasing pottery that can be "used" and "seen."

Oct 10, 2016

Ceramic artist Shohei Fujita's exhibition "Wall Pots" will be held at 8/ ART GALLERY/ Tomio Koyama Gallery in Shibuya Hikarie from October 12th to November 3rd.

Shohei Fujita is a ceramic artist who works under the duo Suna Fujita with fellow ceramic artist Chisato Yamano. They have held numerous solo exhibitions in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Mie, and other locations. His works are characterized by a smooth, frosted-glass texture and lustrous colors, achieved using a unique technique that involves slowly carving away multiple layers of glaze. He also produces a series called "Stone Fruit," featuring small vases and pots with smooth textures and rounded fruit-like shapes. Inspired by the feel of glass shards carved into rounded shapes by waves, the works feature beautiful curves that invite touching.

The upcoming exhibition, "Wall Pots," will spotlight the fact that people casually purchase and appreciate ceramics by dividing them into "things to use" and "things to look at," further blurring the line between interior design and practicality. "For example, you might suddenly notice that a plate that was hanging on the wall like a painting a moment ago now has food on it, or that a vase can sometimes be seen as a sculpture in which flowers can also be arranged," says Fujita. The exhibition will feature Fujita's works, which may be placed on a table, in a cupboard, or hung on a wall, shifting and mixing the roles of "things to use" and "things to admire and enjoy."
