Yuima Nakazato's TOKYO couture shows the future through handcrafts

Oct 25, 2016

On the 21st, Yuima Nakazato's 2016-17 Autumn/Winter collection, which he presented at the Paris Haute Couture Collection in July, was unveiled in the form of an installation at Space O in Omotesando Hills in Tokyo. Seven holographic mirrored booths were set up within the venue, with models moving between each booth at intervals. Like mannequins, the models' ankles were fixed and mechanically rotated, and their arms were made of resin, giving them the appearance of androids. True to the installation's theme, "UNKNOWN," the collection unfolded into an unknown world. The collection presented this time included 13 looks, one more than the Paris collection. Items not shown in Paris were also added to the styling. The collection was comprised of Yuima Nakazato's signature "Unit" line, which is made up of holographic prints folded like origami and joined together without the use of a sewing machine. The units, connecting like cells, feature prisms of light, creating a futuristic impression. All parts are printed on a plotter using 3DCG data, but the rest of the process is entirely handmade. It takes an enormous amount of time to create a single garment. Designer Yuima Nakazato himself has been researching UV-printed holograms on PVC material for about six years, and since last year has commercialized them in bags and other accessories. While previously featured as costumes in stage plays and films, this is the first time they have appeared as part of a collection line. Designed with the expectation that visitors will take photos of them on their smartphones and share them on social media, this production has been a key element in brand identity in the design of international collections and flagship stores over the past few seasons. These innovative ideas and proposals, which measure luxury, are a standout among the content of this year's Amazon Fashion Week TOKYO. Text: Tatsuya Noda
