MIHARA YASUHIRO's new line "NEHAN MIHARA YASUHIRO" launches with debut show in Shinjuku [17SS Women's]

Oct 25, 2016

Designer Yasuhiro Mihara's new line, Nehanne MIHARA YASUHIRO, presented its debut collection in runway style on October 22nd during Amazon Fashion Week TOKYO. The designer chose the underground parking lot of Bunka Fashion College as the venue for the show, expressing his desire to capture the immersive atmosphere and the rawness of Tokyo, where the designers live. From a moment of silence and darkness, a powerful drum performance by Satoshi Shomura of the rock band Alexandros reverberated. Tattoos of snakes, lizards, butterflies, and flowers adorned the skin of models passing by the drum set, creating a mysterious yet ephemeral atmosphere. The monochrome collection drew on design sources deeply connected to the history of Japanese fashion, including modified kimonos, yukatas, samue (work clothes), kasaya (casual formal wear), and the uniforms of the former Japanese military. While incorporating Japanese influences into his collections is nothing new for Yasuhiro Mihara, there were many pieces that blended Japanese and street culture, easily adapting to modern styles, such as a long vest flowing like a hakama, a bustier wrapped like an obi, and comfortable sandals reminiscent of geta sandals.

In the latter half of the show, dot prints of ukiyo-e prints by mid-Edo period artist Toshusai Sharaku and embroidery featuring kimono patterns from ukiyo-e prints captivated the audience.

Nehan Mihara Yasuhiro was founded with the desire to encourage Japanese people to learn about and rediscover Japanese history and traditions. The brand name "Nehan" comes from the Buddhist term "nirvana," which describes a state of mind in which worldly desires are eliminated. Regarding his choice to unveil his first collection at Tokyo Fashion Week, Mihara said, "It was natural to start in Tokyo, where I currently live. I want people living in Japan to see it first."
