French artist Michel Blazy's first solo exhibition in Japan at Maison Hermès in Ginza. Beauty and ugliness in nature, the cycle of life.

Aug 2, 2016

French artist Michel Blazy's first solo exhibition in Japan, "Living Room II: Michel Blazy," will be held at Ginza Maison Hermès Forum in Tokyo's Ginza district from September 16th to November 27th. Since his early days, Michel Blazy has consistently employed plants, vegetables, fruits, insects, and microorganisms to create works that explore the beauty and ugliness of the natural world around us, and the cycle of life, in a raw and poetic way. His works showcase the process of creation itself, which changes over time. His previous works include a living mural created by the cracking and peeling of agar, and a work showing piles of orange peels decaying over the course of several months. Furthermore, snails and rats, creatures often excluded in hygienic environments, sometimes take on collaborative roles, taking on eloquent roles in his work. Material objects created by civilization also coexist, and in a series in which plants are parasitized on outdated household appliances, he contrasts the product's life cycle with the natural passage of time, humorously depicting the transience and robustness of civilization and existence.

This exhibition, titled "Living Room," refers to a space in which life is constantly changing, and takes an equal look at the landscapes that civilization tends to eliminate in the name of comfort.
