■ "Portraits" by William Eggleston

Since the mid-1960s, photographer William Eggleston has been capturing the everyday landscapes and people of his native American South in color, capturing scenes from a film with his unique perspective and sometimes bizarre compositions. Until then, color photography had been seen solely for advertising purposes, but with the emergence of Eggleston and his contemporaries, such as Stephen Shore, color photography began to be viewed and discussed as art, and these works were later dubbed "New Color." This book was published in conjunction with Eggleston's solo exhibition, "Portraits," which opened in July and runs through October 2016 at the National Portrait Gallery in London. It features numerous portraits of family, friends, musicians, and artists that Eggleston has taken over the past half century. While it features his most iconic works, it also includes previously unpublished work, making it a recommended read for fans and those encountering his photography for the first time. Sofia Coppola has praised Eggleston, saying, "Many people take snapshots in the same way as Eggleston, but Eggleston looks like none of them." While Eggleston's photographs are well-known and familiar, viewing them in this large-format collection reveals a striking difference from the current flood of snapshots. This is a must-read for young snapshot lovers.
