Architecture x Books. Architectural concierge Takehiko Sakayama's "Nameless" "XX Bookstore" opens in Aoyama

Aug 9, 2016

Architectural concierge Sakayama Takehiko's "nameless bookstore," "XX Bookstore," is open at the Prismic Gallery in Aoyama, Tokyo, until September 11th.

Sakayama Takehiko used to work as an architect in Korakuen by day and as a bookseller in Daikanyama by night, switching between jobs every day. The newly opened "nameless bookstore," "XX Bookstore," was born from the idea of what would happen if Sakayama Takehiko were to carry out all the work he had previously done in different locations in the same place, repeatedly switching between them in one location.

Inside the gallery, a "stall" made of several boxes stacked vertically and horizontally has been set up. Books and other items for sale are displayed on one side, and tools and materials for design activities are stored on the other. Depending on how the stalls are arranged, they can be used to expand the space of a bookstore or an architectural firm. For example, one box can be removed to create a stool for reading books, or two can be stacked to form the legs of a design desk, allowing for a variety of different uses to be deployed in the space.

A traveling exhibition will also be held in Kyoto from August 11th to 15th during the exhibition. An opening talk will also be held at Gakugei Publishing from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on August 11th. In addition to Takehiko Sakayama himself, the talk will feature architect and researcher Mitsuhiro Sakakibara and Ryusuke Wada, editorial assistant at the Kyoto Design Lab at Kyoto Institute of Technology. The event is limited to 60 people and the participation fee is 1,000 yen, with the social gathering also costing 1,000 yen.
