Aug 23, 2016
It's about an hour's train ride from Tokyo. Seeing the ocean from the train window makes you feel like a kid again. Escape the hustle and bustle of the city, put on your sandals, and you're ready to go! The ocean and blue skies will make your day happy. FASHION HEADLINE has focused on the Shonan area, a town that makes such a day trip a reality.

Stationery stores are fun for adults and children of all ages. Remember those days when you looked forward to using your pocket money to buy a new notebook or tools for crafts? There's a place in Kamakura where you can experience that excitement once again.

From Kamakura Station, walk for about 8 minutes towards Yuigahama. The stationery store "Kotori" is marked by its cute birdhouse-like exterior and old-fashioned rattle door. Inside the store, the nostalgic scent unique to stationery stores wafts through the air. There are so many stationery items that you won't know where to start looking. This small store is filled with treasures, just like a candy store. You'll find pencils and glue that will make you say, "I used to use that!", as well as unique and mysterious stationery you've never seen before, and you'll experience the joys of being transported back to childhood.

"Kotori" is a shop run by seven stationery lovers, offering a selection of original products and their favorites from around Japan. Illustrator Hidaka Kyoko, one of the shop's members, created the "Kotori" logo and other original illustrations that will put a smile on your face, including the Great Buddha of Kamakura, strawberry pants patterns, cats, and children's faces. The stationery is so unique and playful that you'll want to collect them all. "I love Gekkoso Art Supplies in Ginza," says store manager Nakamura Ayako. The store also stocks stationery and miscellaneous goods recommended by stationery enthusiasts, including letter sets from Kyoto's SOU・SOU and subikiawa.

Then, in the pen section lined up at the entrance, there were 0.3mm pens that were perfect for notebooks and a mechanical pencil with a lead that was recommended by the reporter, whose lead was hard to break. "Just try it out!" said store manager Nakamura, with a sparkle in his eyes, as he recommended the Tradio Plaman pen. I was so impressed by how comfortable it felt when I slid the pen across the blank paper provided for testing. Each selected pen has its own unique features and attention to detail, and the more I heard about it, the more I wanted to put it in my own pen case and carry it around with me.
