Experience Amami Oshima's traditional dyeing technique, "mud dyeing," a unique method not seen anywhere else in the world, in Nakameguro. A workshop with local artisans

Aug 29, 2016

A hands-on workshop offering Amami Oshima's traditional "mud dyeing" technique will be held at BRICK & MORTAR in Nakameguro, Tokyo, on September 9th, at 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Mud dyeing is a traditional method that uses a dye made from boiled tachibana (tea tree) trees native to Amami Oshima, and iron-rich mud fields. This workshop will be led by Kanai Shijin of Kanai Kogei, a tsumugi (pongee) dyeing company based in Amami Oshima. This is a rare opportunity to learn about natural dyeing methods, including mud dyeing, while also experiencing the process of dyeing your own favorite items. Kanai Kogei's original dyed stoles, furoshiki (wrapping cloth), tenugui (hand towels), and other items will also be available for purchase during the event. Each session is limited to six participants. Participants are required to bring their own dyeing materials, and can dye up to two items, each roughly the size of a T-shirt. Example items include shirts, T-shirts, eco bags, scarves, etc.
