Tokyo Fashion Week Designer Report Card Vol. 02: Atsushi Nakashima: "Understanding Japanese Culture Only From a Distance"

Dec 23, 2012

FASHION HEADLINE recently asked brands that presented at Tokyo Collection to give their own self-evaluation, with the aim of looking back on Spring/Summer 2013.
Our second guest is Atsushi Nakajima, designer of Atsushi Nakashima. This marked his second time at Tokyo Collection, and he won the DHL Award.
Respondent:
Atsushi Nakashima
Designer: Atsushi Nakajima
Q1. What new challenges did you take on in your creations this season?
A:
After spending seven years overseas, I wanted to rediscover the beauty of Japanese culture, which has been cultivated since ancient times, and I can only appreciate it now that I'm away. So I expressed Japanese elements from a different perspective than before.
Q2. What aspect of the collection did you focus on the most?
A:
It's hard to tell when you actually look at the clothes, but I incorporated Japanese elements into all of the clothes. I skillfully integrated Japanese elements into my clothing, such as pieces where flat, square pieces of fabric are inserted into clothing to create natural drapes, cutting inspired by origami and paper cutting, and a corset dress woven in the same style as samurai armor. Q3. My favorite look/item this season
A:
A gradient jacket folded like origami.
Q4. An item that was popular with buyers and the press
A:
A dress with a gradient print on leather that looks like it's been soaked in ink.
Q5. How would you rate this season's collection? And why?
A:
70 points. It was difficult to clearly express the Japanese elements. This is only my second season since my debut, so there are many things I need to improve on.
Q6. What are your future plans? A: Ever since the brand was launched, we have had our sights set on overseas markets, so we would like to hold exhibitions overseas in the future.
