J. Front Retailing announced preliminary June sales figures on the 1st. According to the figures, Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores saw a 16.4% increase compared to the previous year. The department store business, including the Hakata, Shimonoseki, and Kochi Daimaru locations, also saw a 15.4% increase. Both Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores and the department store business saw year-on-year increases for the 11th consecutive month.
By store, 15 of the 16 directly managed stores and all three affiliated department stores achieved higher sales than the previous year. Among regional stores, the Matsuzakaya Nagoya store showed notable growth (14.5%). The grand opening of the food section on June 19th led to increased sales, primarily in Japanese and Western confectionery, prepared foods, and bakery items. The effect of shopping from one floor to another also played a positive role, resulting in double-digit increases year-on-year for the second consecutive month.
The big increase in sales was due to the success of the clearance sale, which started on June 28th, three days earlier than last year, and the boost effect of the clearance sale held by Matsuzakaya Ginza store (which closed on June 30th due to the redevelopment and reconstruction of the Ginza area). Matsuzakaya Ginza store saw a significant increase in sales of 414.6%, and Daimaru Tokyo store, which has been performing well since its grand opening after expanding its floor space in October last year, also maintained its outstanding sales figures with a 42.3% increase.
In terms of sales by product, sales of jewelry, high-end watches, and luxury brands were strong. In addition, with the rise in temperatures, there was a noticeable increase in mid-summer fashion such as dresses and sandals.
