Dojima River Biennale 2013 held. Artists from Japan and abroad express the diverse beauty of water.

Jul 23, 2013

Following 2009 and 2011, the third Dojima River Biennale 2013 has kicked off at the Dojima River Forum in Osaka. The artistic director, previously held by Mori Art Museum Director Fumio Nanjo and Aomori Museum of Art Chief Curator Takayoshi Iida, will be replaced by Taipei-based independent curator Rudy Tseng. The exhibition's concept is "Little Water," inspired by the location of the Dojima River, which flows through central Osaka. Based on the belief that "Asia's rich civilizations and cultures have always been born along rivers," the exhibition seeks to reconsider the meaning of water and express its poetic beauty, drawing inspiration from its beauty and diverse roles. Tseng serves on the Asia-Pacific Acquisitions Committee at the Tate Gallery in the UK and is a renowned contemporary art collector. The exhibition will include works from his own collection, he said. "I selected pieces from among the works of artists I respect that fit the theme of 'river.'"

While all 39 works on display are conceptual, the participating artists represent a diverse range of nationalities and expressive styles. For example, Lee Mingwei's "Moving Flower Garden," displayed at the entrance, is completed when visitors take flowers home and give them to strangers they encounter on their way home.

Furthermore, "Waterfall," by teamLab, a Japanese artist group consisting of programmers, engineers, mathematicians, architects, and designers, calculated the continuum and interactions of countless water particles to realistically reproduce a flowing waterfall on five projectors. This massive installation, visible from anywhere in the venue, is also the thematic piece of this exhibition.

Not only can you experience "water," but learning about the artist's intentions and ideas makes viewing even more enjoyable. This exhibition allows you to experience the fascinating world of contemporary art.
