Noritaka Tatehana, the man who captivated Lady Gaga, opens his world-first pop-up shoe shop at Isetan

Jul 24, 2013

The world's first pop-up shop by designer Noritaka Tatehana, creator of heelless shoes favored by Lady Gaga and Daphne Guinness, will open on the second floor of Isetan Shinjuku on July 31st. It will run until August 13th.

All shoes are made to order. Tatehana himself will be available for in-store fittings from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on August 3rd and 10th. The event will also mark the world premiere of Tatehana's new sneaker brand, "THE DAUGHTERS." The first release, women's and men's sneakers, will be available for pre-sale at Isetan.

In addition, leading up to the event, approximately 15 pieces, primarily from the museum's collection, will be exhibited in the Art Frame on the second floor of the main building from July 24th. Regarding his first pop-up event, Tatehana said, "I believe fashion is communication. Expressing the inner self through fashion is a new experience. I want people to start by experiencing it for themselves."

The unique shape of these shoes, which combine the traditional Japanese sandals of courtesans with modern motifs, has captivated celebrities around the world. They are currently housed as art pieces in the permanent collections of the Museum at F.I.T. in New York and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

"Japan has always been at the heart of my creations. While I studied traditional dyeing and weaving techniques such as Yuzen dyeing at university, it's important to keep an eye on the present. By focusing on modern life, you can also sense the history of the past. It's also important to pay attention to the everyday, which we often overlook, and there are many clues to be found there. I believe that interpreting the modern era in addition to Japan's classic identity will lead to the creation of new values," Tatehana explained.

Tatehana was born in Tokyo in 1985 and grew up in Kamakura. He began making clothes on his own at the age of 15. In 2006, he entered Tokyo University of the Arts, majoring in dyeing and weaving. Upon graduating in 2010, he founded his own maison, NORITAKA TATEHANA, and launched his collection. That same year, he personally pitched himself to Lady Gaga, and became her exclusive shoemaker. He has participated in fashion weeks around the world, including Paris, New York, and Japan. Since 2010, he has designed shoes for the Somarta collection. His work has also been exhibited at COMME des GARÇONS shops both in Japan and overseas, and at SHOW STUDIO London, organized by Nick Knight.
