Photographer Paul Kooiker, known for his collaborative book with Rick Owens, holds his first solo exhibition in Japan

Oct 2, 2015

Dutch contemporary photographer Paul Kooiker's solo exhibition "Nude Animal Cigar" will be held at G/P Gallery in Ebisu, Tokyo, from October 3rd to November 22nd. Paul Kooiker's work focuses on themes derived from the act of voyeurism, shame, and distanced viewing, using female nudes as its motif. He has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions around the world, winning the Prix de Rome in 1996 and the A. Roland Holst Award in 2009. In Japan, he also attracted attention for creating a special book in collaboration with fashion designer Rick Owens. This exhibition will feature typological photographs of nudes, animals, and cigar butts, motifs that are closest to Paul Kooiker's true essence. The works were taken impromptu using an iPhone, but are based on sepia tones and painterly compositions, resulting in cynical works that paradoxically satirize nostalgic photography and authoritarianism.
