A symbol of prosperity since ancient times, the ear of wheat is considered a gift from the gods to humans and is deeply associated with Ceres, the goddess of harvest and fertility. Empress Joséphine loved the ear of wheat, and it has become a prominent motif in the Maison's creations.
This piece is brimming with Chaumet's signature high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail. The openwork sliding cover features a three-dimensional depiction of a swaying wheat motif. The leaves are made of yellow gold with a brushed finish to reduce their luster, creating a beautiful contrast with the polished ears of wheat set with diamonds. The hands that peek out from between the gaps in the cover are shaped like wheat leaves, creating the realistic sensation of the ears swaying with every movement.
As Chaumet's founder, Marie-Étienne Nitot, was a jeweller, goldwork is a technique that evokes the Maison's roots. The aventurine dial visible through the openwork cover evokes the starry night sky, adding depth to the color of the satin strap. The strap buckle is decorated with pavé diamonds, and the 30mm size is rare for a secret watch.
