From October 14th to 27th, Isetan Shinjuku opened a pop-up shop featuring merchandise by Scottish designer and artist Donna Wilson on the fifth floor of the main building's Living & Interiors section. A workshop was held on the 25th to commemorate her visit to Japan. Donna Wilson is originally from Scotland and currently lives and works in London. She creates a wide range of products, including knitted stuffed animals, fashion items, furniture, and interior accessories. She has also created numerous installations for museums and public facilities. She has received numerous awards, including the ELLE DECOR British Design Award 2010 Designer of the Year, and frequently holds solo exhibitions in major cities around the world, including Paris, New York, and Tokyo. With such an impressive career, the shop's merchandise floor has been bustling with fans since the first day of the event. Items for sale at the venue include knitted hats, scarves, cushions, and more. They're perfect for gifts or personal use.
Also, from October 21st to 27th, a Japan exhibition featuring Donna's original drawings and prints will be held in the Art & Frame section on the same floor, where visitors can purchase them. Shoppers stopped in their tracks to look at the original drawings and prints, and the atmosphere in the store was more relaxed than usual.
Furthermore, on the 25th, a workshop was held where participants could make dolls with Donna Wilson herself, who was visiting Japan. The venue provided a DIY kit with the charming name "Make your own Monster." Participants could freely combine the felt parts inside to create their own unique monsters.
Of course, Donna herself enjoyed making monsters during the workshop and seemed to enjoy chatting with the participants. So, after the event, we caught up with Donna for an interview.
--Did you enjoy today's workshop?
Donna: "Yes, very much. Lately I've been communicating with clients via email, so it's been a while since I've sewed."
--After making something by hand for the first time in a while, did you once again realize the joy of making things?
Donna: "That's right. Whenever I feel like my imagination is drying up, I go on a trip and incorporate the experiences and new emotions I gain from my travels into my work. This workshop was very inspiring. I also feel that the time I spend in Japan is a source of inspiration for me."
--You'll be staying in Japan for 10 days this time. Of the places you've visited so far, which is your most memorable?
Donna: "Oze, of course. The nature was so beautiful. Scotland, where I grew up, is also a place full of beautiful nature, but I think lush nature is a great source of inspiration for me."
--By the way, preparations for Christmas have already begun on the floor where this event was held. How do you plan to spend Christmas this year, Donna?
Donna: "I'm planning to have a great time with all my beloved family. I want to visit both my hometown and my husband's hometown. I also have plans to go to Iceland to see the Northern Lights."
--That sounds exciting.
Donna: "Yes, very much. I hope everyone in Japan has a wonderful Christmas. I love Japanese culture and the Japanese people. Everyone is so friendly and shows such kindness wherever I go, so I feel happy every day."
--Finally, could you give a message to your beloved Japanese fans?
Donna "Why not spend this Christmas with your loved ones in a happy and creative way? I also plan to release many new pieces in the future, so please look forward to them. I'm also planning to release many lifestyle items in the future, so I hope they will help create a warm atmosphere in your room."
As the interview progresses, Donna begins to talk more about the feelings she puts into her pieces. It is precisely because of her purity that each and every piece is filled with an endlessly gentle expression.
