To conclude the year, five staff members at NADiff Apartment will be presenting their "best of books published in 2016," one book per day until the 31st! On Day 1, staff member I will be selecting the best of 2016.

■ "When an Apple Falls from a Tree, a Sound is Made" by Elena Tutatchikova

This is the first collection of works by Elena Tutatchikova, whose work focuses on the relationship between nature and humans while examining the generation of memory. Since 2009, the artist has been collecting photographs of his hometown, Russia, centered on his childhood memories.

Summer is a special time in cold regions. Russians have a tradition of spending time in dachas, homes surrounded by forests and rivers, where children often find treasures while playing. Beautiful bound-in "treasures" are carefully arranged in the middle of this book. The flow of the photographs is so clear that it makes adults who can no longer be children sit up a little straighter. The story written at the end of the book, which accompanies the works, vividly depicts those moments during the summer when they were still boys and girls. The moment when an apple falls from the tree is surely a memory that shapes who we are. This nostalgia will be drawn from deep within the viewer's senses.
