Our flagship store in Ebisu, Tokyo, NADiff Apartment (1-18-4 Ebisu, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, 1F NADiff A/P/A/R/T), where we run our weekly Thursday column "The Book You Should Read Now," has once again introduced us to many books for 2016.
To conclude the year, five staff members at NADiff Apartment will be presenting their "best of books published in 2016," one book per day until the 31st! On the fourth day, staff member Y will be selecting the best of 2016.
ROADSIDE LIBRARY vol.001 Hihokan by Tsuzuki Kyoichi
The first book that comes to mind as the most impactful book of the year is Tsuzuki Kyoichi's ROADSIDE LIBRARY vol.001 Hihokan. My first eye was caught by the cute pink cover of the small silver can, which read "Treasure Museum" in writing. Opening it, I found a USB inside (which even lights up when pressed!). It's an e-book, a new type of photo book available for download in PDF format. Once downloaded, numerous photographs appear, accompanied by commentary by Tsuzuki. The most striking feature is the high resolution of the images. By zooming in and out, I can get closer and further away from the museum's former appearance, which has now almost completely disappeared. The vividness of the images creates a sense of realism that is nothing short of astonishing. This experience made me feel like books had entered a new phase in 2016. Tsuzuki, who said it had become increasingly difficult to create books the way he wanted, finally decided to self-publish an e-book. This format feels perfectly suited to today's world, where accessing a wide variety of information via digital media, including computers, smartphones, and tablets, is now commonplace. It was a shocking event that made me feel like a new format for books was born this year.
