Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi introduces the world of Kyoto-style restaurant "Wakuden." Works by former Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa also on display and for sale.

Apr 20, 2016

Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store is holding a limited-time event, "Wakuden's Work and Play," until May 10th at Gallery Life Mining on the store's 5th floor Living Floor, which delves into the beauty and culture of Japanese living, to introduce the hospitality of Kyoto restaurant Wakuden.

At the venue, the "work" that Wakuden has cultivated as a restaurant and the "play" that Wakuden has shared with its customers through its love for its hometown will be expressed through the cuisine served by Wakuden, as well as Japanese goods, ceramics, and more.

In the space expressing Wakuden's "work," based on the restaurant's desire to "convey the wonder of the food and culture that has been passed down through Japanese cuisine," Murasakino Wakuden's new product, "Washyou," a traditional Japanese restaurant dashi stock, is being unveiled for the first time, as well as the restaurant's popular gift items, such as "Seiko," a lotus root confectionery, "Nagomi-ni," a Kyoto-style cooked dish, and "Sasahotaru," a seasonal yokan sweet.

In the "play" space, chopstick rests and flower vases by former Prime Minister and renowned potter Morihiro Hosokawa are on display and for sale, and Yoshioka Yukio, a dyeing and weaving historian and fifth-generation head of "Yoshioka Dyeing," has proposed table fabrics and stoles to complement Wakuden's summer interior decorations. Additionally, Kyoto-based Tessaido will be introducing small plates and sake cups, Kadode Washi will be introducing postcards and letter sets with hand-painted seasonal illustrations, and Doraku (the character for "earth" has a comma inside it) will be introducing earthenware pots and tableware.

In addition, on April 22nd (2pm to 4pm), Yoshioka Yukio will be holding a talk show on "The Colors of Japan" in the Culture Salon on the 9th floor of the new building of the store. (Available to the first 30 people, free of charge. For reservations and inquiries, please contact Mitsukoshi Nihombashi Main Store Gallery Life Mining at 03-3274-8935.)
