Kids, gather here! Travel back in time to Isetan's "Mysterious Planet" this Golden Week. Experience the future by playing with your past self.

Apr 22, 2016
Starting April 27th, Isetan Shinjuku Main Store will host a special Golden Week event for children, "Time Slip Planet - A Mysterious Planet Where Time Flows," simultaneously at The Stage on the first floor of the main building and the Event Hall on the seventh floor. The event is supervised by "cocoiku," a learning space launched by the store last spring.

"Time Slip Planet" is based on the concept of a "mysterious planet" where children can learn about time while playing. It is a space where children can create, discover, and learn through unique play experiences. Isetan focused on this period, when families visit the store in large numbers, and planned the event to also promote cocoiku.

A "departure and arrival point" for Time Slip Planet will appear on The Stage on the first floor. Visitors can see what's happening on the planet from a giant monitor that allows them to communicate with the planet in real time. The event on The Stage on the first floor will run until May 3rd, and anyone can participate for free. In addition to showing videos about Cocoiku, you can also talk to the instructors about what you're learning at Cocoiku. There is also a ticket booth for issuing passes to Planet (the participation fee for the pass is 2,160 yen including tax, reservations required), and you can get your pass here before heading to the 7th floor.

The "departure and arrival point" for Time Slip Planet will appear on the 1st floor The Stage.

Time Slip Planet, which will appear in the 7th floor event hall, can only be entered by those who have a pass issued at the ticket booth on the 1st floor or the event hall on the 7th floor, and the event will run until May 8th (after the 4th, tickets can be issued at the event hall on the 7th floor and the Cocoiku Park counter on the 6th floor). Inside the venue, LED smart lighting by Philips Hue and an original system developed by Cocoiku allow you to climb a sloping hill and freely control the light and sound. Additionally, standing in front of a video screen set up in the venue, children can rewind and pause videos of themselves, offering the unique experience of playing with their past selves. A video screen, also aimed at infants and toddlers, distorts the image of the person reflected on the screen. In addition, a workshop was held in which participants could create decorations for the venue using foraged materials. A system was also introduced that allowed participants to use their nicknames and play with friends they made on-site using each other's passwords, incorporating a learning system for social media.

Time Slip Planet offers a unique Cocoiku environment, without detailed explanations, allowing children to discover how to play on their own. Play leaders encourage children's ideas, providing opportunities for them to use their bodies to deepen their understanding of information and develop creative social skills. Instead of imposing rules or prohibitions, children are exposed to danger, independence, and responsibility, and their development is supported through dialogue and supervision.

"Cocoiku" invites professional creators and specialists active in the field to serve as lecturers for workshops. Museum educator Aida Daiya, who is supervising Cocoiku, is scheduled to visit the venue every day during the event. Aida is currently involved in educating graduate students as a specially appointed assistant professor in the GCL Development Program at the University of Tokyo, and this will be a great opportunity for parents raising children to hear about education.
