The first ever "Yura Kaoruko Ceramics Exhibition: Something's There" will be held at the Art and Craft Salon on the 6th floor of the main building of Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store. Yura is a ceramic artist who has garnered attention for her painted works with yokai motifs and her "Melting Monster Series," in which yokai patterns are created by blending the texture of the surface. Yura has been gaining attention recently, with past group exhibitions in which her works have sold out. Her works, including sake cups and tea bowls, feature bizarre designs yet somehow exude a sense of cuteness, all in one place, and will be on display and for sale. Enjoy the mysterious world of yokai, who may be out there somewhere.

About the "Melting Monster" Series
Yura began creating his series of depictions of monsters, hoping that by depicting monsters and other creatures on familiar, everyday items such as blue-and-white porcelain vessels, he could create a sense of incongruity while also providing an opportunity for visitors to indulge in the fantasy of "maybe something is actually there." At the time, I was searching for and painting monsters and other creatures from the random, dark patterns of the blue and white porcelain, but I wanted to paint based on patterns that I couldn't control myself, so I came up with this series, a play on the words "monster" and "melted ghost," from the patterns that form when the glaze melts. The images are harder to see than in blue and white porcelain, so the viewer can search for them and think, "Maybe there's something there."

Artist's Statement
I love catching insects. My painting method is the same as catching insects.
Patterns made from the random flow of glaze, and gosu patterns made by freely waving my brush without thinking. I search for living creatures or monsters in such seemingly ordinary patterns, and when I find them, I add lines to depict them. Living creatures often don't live where I want to draw them, but I draw lines knowing that this is just how living creatures are.
"Maybe they're here, too." When I walk around with this thought in mind, even when I'm not drawing, I find all kinds of "something" and it's fun. I create with the hope that I can give even just a little of that feeling to those who view my works in this exhibition.
