This fall, Isetan Mitsukoshi will hold "ISETAN MITSUKOSHI DESIGN WEEK 2013" at its three flagship stores - Isetan Shinjuku, Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store, and Ginza Mitsukoshi - under the theme "HAND MADE BY/FOR ME (Handmade by me, for me)." Over 30 events are scheduled for the event, which runs from October 23rd to November 5th. The main event will be "Fushi to Kakera: MARUNI COLLECTION HIROSHIMA with mina perhonen," the first collaborative project by Maruni Wood Industry between product designer Naoto Fukasawa and mina perhonen designer Akira Minagawa. The event will be held at The Stage on the first floor of Isetan Shinjuku from October 23rd to 29th, and original furniture will be available for limited sale. This project develops products using materials and scraps discarded during mass production, such as "knots" (cross-sections of branches that appear on the surface of boards) and "fragments" (offcuts left over from clothing production). The project seeks to discover the joy and charm of the uneven natural materials and the changes that occur over time in products, proposing them as uniquely valuable products. A limited-edition version of Fukasawa's "HIROSHIMA" chair series, developed by Maruni Wood Industry, uses knotted materials, including a special chair combining a patchwork of "fragments" fabric by Mina Perhonen and original fabrics. Available in three materials: oak, walnut, and beech, each with a fabric chosen to complement the color and texture of the material. Other products include a patchwork bag made from the same material as the chair seat, a chair made from patchwork scraps, the "MALTA" table with a solid wood top, and a chest with a solid wood top and top panel.
In addition, as a related event, "ONKO CHISHIN - Learning from the past - Mediterranean Series / MEDITERRANEAN by maruni" will be held on the 5th floor of Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store from October 23rd to November 5th. Two discontinued models from the "Mediterranean Series," which was developed by Maruni Wood Industry for Isetan in 1979 and is still known as a staple furniture of the company today, will be remade, exhibited, and sold.
