Singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse was born on September 14, 1983, in Middlesex, England. Her family influenced her to listen to jazz from a young age, and she developed an interest in R&B and hip-hop as a teenager. She was expelled from drama school at age 16 and sent a demo tape to the record company of her classmate, singer Tyler James, which led to her signing a contract. Her debut album, "Frank," was released in 2003 and became a hit, selling over 670,000 copies in the UK. Her second album, "Back to Black," released in 2006, reached number one in the UK and number seven in the US, becoming the best-selling album of the year in the UK. She was nominated for six Grammy Awards in 2008, winning five, including Best New Artist and Best Song. Despite her immense success as a singer, she struggled with drug and alcohol addiction in her personal life. She was in and out of alcohol and drug rehabilitation facilities and was arrested several times for illegal drug possession. She was also denied a visa to enter the United States, which prevented her from attending the Grammy Awards. In 2011, she embarked on a full-fledged comeback tour, but her drunken appearances onstage drew backlash, leading to the cancellation of the entire tour. She was found dead in July of the same year at her London home. The cause of death was alcohol poisoning. She was 27 years old. Jean Paul Gaultier created a dress in her memory for his Spring/Summer 2012 haute couture collection. Currently, London's Proud Galleries is hosting an exhibition tracing her life and career, "Amy Winehouse: For You I Was A Flame" through October 6th.
