It's finally, or rather, suddenly, starting to feel like autumn.
By the way, how many movies and books do you all watch per year?
I watch a lot more movies, quite a few. Between theaters, DVDs (BLUE RAY), and streaming services, I probably read close to 100 a year. On the other hand, my reading of books has slowed down in the age of the internet, but I still read a fair amount because I travel a lot for work.
And this is true for both, but when I rewatch a movie I saw a long time ago or reread a book, I notice a surprising discrepancy with my memory.
You might think that just keeping up with new works is hard, but please give it a try. You're sure to discover something new. I find myself wanting to watch or read something again, so I think there must be some kind of "connection" to it.
One example from me is "Taxi Driver." The impression and memory of the film when I saw it as a teenager was so strong that if I had to put it into words, it would be "the darkness of modern society corroding the mind of a Vietnam War veteran." The violent scenes were so vivid that I never had the chance to watch it again, but over the past decade or so, I've rewatched it a few times on a whim. The impression I got was so different that I wondered, "Is this really a love story?" It even seemed like a happy ending.
Needless to say, the film itself hasn't changed; it's my sensibilities that have. There are emotions I only understand as I get older, and there are parts I simply didn't enjoy because I didn't have the necessary knowledge.
Since then, I've actively rewatched works I already know that are considered "masterpieces."
This is POST #013, in honor of Autumn Art.
