The detailed depictions go beyond realism and stir the soul.

The Kobe Fashion Museum's special exhibition, "Yoshimura Yoshio: Beyond Transcendental Craftsmanship," allows you to immerse yourself in a space surrounded by such works.

The countless self-portraits he drew every day, newspapers on which he copied every single letter, and a 10-meter colored pencil drawing. Yoshimura Yoshio's almost too realistic works are awe-inspiring to behold.

Born in Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1950, Yoshimura first came to prominence in 2007. His works exhibited at the "Roppongi Crossing 2007" exhibition at the Mori Art Museum that year generated significant buzz, and at the age of 57, Yoshimura suddenly became a darling of the contemporary art scene.

This retrospective of Yoshimura Yoshio's work presents a comprehensive picture of his career through approximately 60 of his most representative works, including his early monochrome prints and drawings, his later colorful floral works, and the self-portraits he continued to paint throughout his life. Yoshimura passed away prematurely in 2013, and we hope you will enjoy these sincere works that are more than just skilled paintings; they continually question the meaning of painting and life.

■Yoshimura Yoshio Profile
Born in Hofu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1950. After graduating from Yamaguchi College of Arts, he worked as a designer at an advertising agency for five years before studying printmaking at Sokei Art School and other institutions, and made his debut as an artist of prints and drawings. His monochrome works, which feature motifs of ordinary everyday scenes, have been selected for numerous art exhibitions both in Japan and abroad. In 1985, he moved to Tokuji, Yamaguchi Prefecture, where he began to use colorful flowers in the midst of abundant nature as a motif. In 2007, his works exhibited at "Roppongi Crossing: Pulses to the Future" (art museum) attracted attention. He continued to create energetically thereafter, but sadly passed away in 2013 due to illness.
