Musician Marc Bolan was born on September 30, 1947, and died on September 16, 1977. He was originally from London, England. He admired Bob Dylan and began frequenting clubs and discos in London's Soho neighborhood at the age of 15. He signed with Decca Records in 1965 and debuted with "The Wizard," but the album was a flop. In 1967, he formed Tyrannosaurus Rex, gaining attention in the underground scene. He released his first album, "Tyrannosaurus Rex Here!" and his second, "Mystic Conqueror," back-to-back, and became a popular folk rock group. In December 1970, the band shortened its name to T. Rex, and the single "Ride a White Swan," released shortly thereafter, became a huge hit. Their 1971 album "Denki no Musha" reached number one on the UK charts, and they became a glam rock band that took the world by storm. During their 1972 Japan tour, Mark became so scared by an earthquake that occurred before the show began that he wanted to cancel it, ultimately playing for less than an hour. In 1973, they released the classic "20th Century Boy," which was used as show music for Jean Paul Gaultier's 2005-06 Autumn/Winter women's ready-to-wear collection. Around 1974, the glam rock boom ended, and their popularity plummeted. In 1976, they replaced all band members except Mark and shifted to punk rock, which helped to revive their popularity. However, Mark died in a car accident in Barnes, London, at the age of 29 in September 1977. The band went on hiatus. Mark had previously said, "I don't think I'll live to be 30." In his private life, he married June Child, who was an employee of his agency, in 1970. However, in 1973 he began dating black singer Gloria Jones, and in 1975 he had a son with her. Gloria was the driver when he was involved in a car accident in 1977. After Mark's death, it was fellow glam rock pioneer David Bowie who helped the mother and child, who were left homeless.
