An art festival focusing on the "sounds" of trains, featuring innovative exhibits such as contemporary sound art and performances

Oct 18, 2014

The "Art Area B1" at Naniwabashi Station on the Keihan Railway in Osaka will host the fourth Railway Art Festival, "Sound Station," starting October 18th. The Railway Art Festival aims to uncover new artistic possibilities while focusing on the culture and history of railways. This year, the fourth edition of the festival, will focus on the "sound" surrounding railways. In addition to exhibiting artworks that capture sound from multiple angles, various attractions will be held. The venue will feature works such as "OPTRON," an instrument that uses the discharge noise of fluorescent lights, and "Elementary Duet," in which a wiper motor emits a roaring sound. Sound artists such as Akio Suzuki and Yukio Fujimoto will also be exhibiting, and new musical works will be explored, using metal pieces from railways and modified drum sets. Visitors will also be able to freely sound the Keihan Railway horns installed throughout the venue. The sounds emitted by these artworks and the voices of visitors will be collected and posted online as a "sound broadcast." Various events will also be held during the opening period. A six-part public radio program by musician Taisa Konan will be recorded, and talk programs and live performances will be held at the long-established club "METRO." Composer Makoto Nomura will create music themed around each station in the workshop "Music from 46 Keihan Line Stations," which will be performed in concert format as the closing event. Other paid events include "HOUSEHOLD AFFAIRS," which will combine performance acts and sound sculptures on November 23rd. The performance will combine light and video art with rock and roll. Meanwhile, "Noise Train," which will be held on December 6th, will combine the sounds of the train, the scenery outside the window, and guest performances inside a moving train. "An Evening of Trains and Music," a contemporary music concert inspired by trains, will be held on December 19th.
