"Smart for Jeremy" is a collaboration between American designer Jeremy Scott and the electric car maker Smart.
This special limited edition car, unveiled the day before the Los Angeles Motor Show, is on display at Shibuya Hikarie, the main venue for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tokyo 2013-14 A/W. Jeremy Scott himself visited Japan and spoke to us in front of the Smart.
--What was the inspiration behind the Smart design?
I wanted to create something that would surprise people, something new, full of hope, and inspire everyone. I pursued a unique and special design while retaining the iconic shape of the Smart.
--What is the meaning behind the wings that often appear on your shoes and other designs?
They are positive, uplifting, and a symbol of freedom.
--Do you like driving?
Living in L.A., a car is essential. I always drive while listening to my favorite pop music, like Rihanna or Katy Perry.
In Japan, Jeremy Scott may be better known as the designer of the shoes with gorillas on the ankles that former track and field athlete and talent So Takei always wears. His shocking color schemes and witty animal motifs have become well-established. This car, which took eight months to develop, is very much in Jeremy's style, with its iconic wings, "eyebrows" above the headlights, and wheels shaped like airplane propellers. A special edition model is scheduled to go on sale later this year.
