Accessories from SOPHIA203, created by Swedish designer Sophia Edstrand, are becoming increasingly popular among buyers.
After working for the French jewelry brand MARIE-HELENE DE TAILLAC, Sophia started her own brand in 2009. Her accessories and bags, featuring traditional Indian hand embroidery, are gaining fans in Japan as well.
The secret to their popularity is the carefully crafted, high-quality construction, using soft leather and velvet even for the lining, and the delicate, Parisian-inspired designs. Another major attraction is the price range, with brooches and bracelets priced at 2,000 to 3,000 yen, and pouches and pochettes large enough to hold a laptop starting at under 20,000 yen.
The theme for the 2013-14 Fall/Winter season is Russia in the 17th century, during the Romanov dynasty. Embroidery of clovers, Russian red roses, images of winter castles, baroque hearts, lily of the valley beloved by Russian princesses, the face of a Siberian tiger, and imperial egg patterns adorn bags and accessories. The children's collection is inspired by the world of Grimm's fairy tales, with ladybugs, rabbits, foxes, apples, mushrooms, and more. The variety of bags in particular has increased, with the addition of clutches, pochettes, pouches, and tote bags.
In Japan, the line is available in select shops and department stores, and an exclusive collection is scheduled to be released at the Isetan Shinjuku store in April.
