To commemorate the 40th anniversary, the first full-scale exhibition, "Pingu Exhibition," which began touring Tokyo (Matsuya Ginza) in August 2020, will be held for a limited time from February 3, 2021 at a special venue on the 13th floor of Daimaru Umeda. In addition to materials related to the original author, Ottmar Guttmann, this exhibition will bring together approximately 400 valuable materials from the production of "Pingu," including authentic clay figures, dioramas, and film used in the Swiss studio at the time, as well as original drawings and storyboards being shown in Japan for the first time. This exhibition will also feature rare materials never before seen here, such as anecdotes about Pingu recounted for the first time based on interview records with Katto Seishi, the only Japanese animator active at the Pengu Studio at the time. Additionally, the exhibition is packed with content for parents and children to experience the exciting new world of "Pingu," including original event footage from the 3DCG animation "Pingu in the City," produced in Japan in 2017. Original Animation【Chapter 1: BIRTH - The Secret Story of Pingu's Birth】
This exhibition will feature never-before-seen materials such as anecdotes about the original author, Ottmar Guttmann, production materials, and storyboards. It will introduce how Ottmar and the studio staff created Pingu.

[Chapter 3: STUDIO - A production studio full of charm]
A model of the filming stand used in Pingu Studio will be on display, introducing the animation production process and filming methods. In addition, "Pingu's Many Faces," which brings together the innocent and colorful expressions of Pingu and his friends, and footage of dubbing scenes will be exhibited, introducing Pingu's attention to detail, which has been carried over to 3DCG animation, in terms of "facial expressions" and "voice."
Pingu with All His FacesExhibits: Model of the filming stand, tools and materials used in clay production, 35mm film, Pingu with All His Faces (a figure of Pingu's face and a collection of the characters' facial expressions), video of dubbing recording scenes, etc.
[Chapter 4 ART PIECE - Pingu's Art Pieces]
Pingu's playful, flexible body movements make use of the unique properties of clay and are one of the elements that add richness to the story. His freely expressed body movements, from stretching wildly to being flattened, will be exhibited as "time objects." Clay props that add color to the works will also be on display.

[Chapter 5: 3DCG 3DCG animation and the future of Pingu]
"Pingu in the City," a 3DCG animation produced in Japan since 2017, creates the world of Pingu using CG, pursuing the characteristics of clay texture and stop-motion movement. With the dynamism unique to CG and a theme of occupations that children can easily relate to, Pingu's world has been made even more appealing, and you can enjoy interacting with him through video and 3DCG.

What is Pingu?
Stop-motion animation was created by Swiss filmmaker Otmar Guttmann. It has been 40 years since the test film that would become the prototype for "Pingu" was produced in 1980. Since 1990, the TV series has been broadcast in over 155 countries and regions around the world, and the warm and humorous stories of the penguin boy Pingu and his friends are loved by people all over the world.
