ANREALAGE and COTTON USA develop innovative workwear that turns stains into light when exposed to a flash

Mar 4, 2016

COTTON USA, which promotes American cotton, has collaborated with ANREALAGE in cooperation with women's fashion magazine Vogue Japan to create innovative workwear. The workwear was produced as part of the "POWER of COTTON" project, a new initiative of the COTTON USA Mark Campaign 2016, launched by Cotton Council International (CCI). The "POWER of COTTON" project aims to revamp the image of traditional Japanese crafts and techniques, which are declining due to a lack of successors, as "tough, dirty, and demanding," by producing innovative workwear made from high-quality American cotton, which is renowned worldwide. For this project, ANREALAGE designer Kunihiko Morinaga designed a special workwear piece for Momentum Factory Orii, located in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, which has innovated traditional copperware dyeing techniques.

The workwear is designed to resemble the stains that accidentally appear on the workshop floors, walls, and clothing of the craftsmen. At first glance, the uniforms are pure white cotton, but when they reflect the light of a flash or fluorescent light, a completely different pattern emerges vividly, making them an innovative item. By wearing the stains that have accumulated in the workshop, which are also "medals" for the craftsmen, as light, the piece expresses the desire for the next generation to inherit the spirit of the craftsmen.
